Holidays, Old Dogs & New Tricks


2009 is turning out to be another wet summer in the UK, encouraging the annual migration of British tourists to fly off to warmer climes. Many of them will fly with troubled British Airways through its still-shiny Terminal 5, which handles some 30 million BA passengers each year.
So who better than ‘the world’s favourite airline’ to help both frequent and occasional passengers to prepare for a holiday, with helpful tips about one of the trickier tasks of a holiday - packaging your bags ?
Well - just about anybody, it turns out.
BA’s luggage advice consists almost entirely of details about baggage restrictions - what’s allowed and what isn’t, size constraints, liquid allowances and so on. What about some useful, practical, creative advice on HOW to pack, to get the best out of these allowances ? Come on, guys - add some value here to your customer base.
British Airways could easily comb the web, and compile its own branded advice, tailored to suit different customer types - how to pack an overnight bag for a business traveller, what to take for long-haul backpackers, or how to pack a carry-on case when travelling with children.
This kind of advice could even be linked to a passengers’ flight itinerary - it’s not hard for a system to spot an overnight European flight or a Round-The-World ticket, and automatically bundle relevant luggage advice into the confirmation email.
It could also make a great viral campaign, bringing traffic to the BA website, and helping to drive bookings at a time when BA are desparate for passenger growth. Sadly, like so many of its competitors, BA seems to lack either the imagination or the interest in thinking of its passengers in this way.
